Pulled by a Sea-Doo Wake 155, the 2009 Red Bull Tow-At surf event in Sebastian’s Inlet, Florida, went off without a hitch last January, despite blustery, choppy conditions. Pro surfer Ben Bourgeoius took the title, his second in the tournament’s 5-year tenure, after capping his heats with an explosive aerial 360. Unlike conventional surfing, being towed into the waves at speeds in excess of 20 mph gives competitors the ability to launch huge aerials and carve deeper turns on the face than they could by sheer human locomotion.

This spectator event, which is increasing in popularity every year, also allows competitors to surf far more waves than they would were they to paddle into them. Designed to ride over the waves rather than piercing or stuffing into them — not what you want to do in the surfline — the Sea-Doo Wake, with its 155 hp four-stroke engine, helped launch surfers into the waves and then picked them up for the next ride within a matter of seconds. Bourgeoius took home a new Sea-doo GTI for the win. Victory is sweet.
